This Song Will Save Your Life

Written by Leila Sales

Pubished September 2013 by Farrar, Straus & Giroux

My overall opinion of the book for most of the novel was weary.  By the time that I had finished this book I felt a little better about it but parts of it fundamentally bothered my own opinions and beliefs and it made me uncomfortable as I read it.  This is not to say it isn't a good book, because I still liked it.  It was a good story.  I just think that I had some preconceived opinions which clashed with some of the things that were happening in the book.

Most of those problems occurred because I identified with the main character.  Elise is what you would call an outsider if you were to put high school kids in categories.  She isn't part of the mainstream school groups and feels like nobody likes her.  I was that kid for most of my life, I didn't have a solid group of friends until later in middle school and not a group of friends that would stick with me and have the same interests until high school.  However, throughout the novel some of the choices she makes upset me.  They are decisions that I would never make but that's because of not exactly my moral code, but the rules by which I live.  Other times she was great.

The plot of the book was good though.  I liked the premise, although I had that sinking feeling you get when you see the author stacking up things that are going to fall down all over the character later.  It had a good plot and a good pace and even though I was reluctant at times I still read it in two days.

The book was fine, three stars for me is not necessarily a memorable book but not a bad book, it was average.  If you like music then you will like this book because it also has a song list in the back and is about a girl who wants to be a DJ music plays a big part.  If you are like me and get stressed out when you see characters making decisions you don't agree with then keep in mind that is going to be a thing in this novel.

It wasn't bad, it wasn't good, but you should read it to form your own opinion.
