Alright I read the first book in this series last spring. It was sitting on Gretchen's shelf and the cover was really pretty. I saw that the second one had been released when walking around Barnes and Noble this fall but I wasn't particularly motivated to get it. This was in part because the first book hadn't moved me very much, and if you would like to know my thoughts on it then see my guest post here.
Black Friday rolled around, which was promptly followed by Cyber Monday which let me know that both books in this series were on sale. I believe I got both books for about $5 plus shipping. It was a deal and they would look nice on my shelf, so I bought them. They do indeed look nice on my shelf but I don't feel that the books got better.
My overall feeling of the first book was that it was just another book in its genre and overwhelmingly predictable, that did not change at all for the second book. I was still underwhelmed with the main characters and just as enamored with the secondary characters. I don't know what it is, perhaps it is the fact that the main characters are almost always Mary Sue's male and female in this case, but we get to see weakness in the people around them. It is the weaknesses and quirks that make characters interesting to me.
This is another basic second book in a dystopian series. This is when war breaks out. The rebels were gaining force and beginning to stand together, they now have an icon in Ash or Phoenix as the people now call him. There is even whiffs of a love triangle forming. It was extremely painful for me.
I don't know if I am merely not in the mood for a book like this, or if it is actually as bad as I felt it was, but I was not at all impressed. I gave it three out of five stars because it wasn't bad per say, but it definitely wasn't good. Three for me is okay. It had good things, it had weaker things and overall it was predictable. I don't know if there is anything else to say about it.
